Environmental Stewardship - Scaled Testing and Demonstration
SRNL has the rare capability to design and conduct both radiological and non-radiological testing and demonstrations from laboratory scale through pilot- and full-scale. Conventional laboratories, shielded cells, the SRNL Engineering Development Laboratory, and mobile modular facilities enable SRNL to perform a full suite of research activities as well as development leading directly to deployment. This capability plays a critical role in tank waste processing for SRS and Hanford, legacy nuclear materials processing operations in SRS H-Canyon, and environmental remediation and D&D activities around the complex.
Associated SRNL competencies and capabilities include:
Analytical Laboratories and Methods
- Broad experience in developing and deploying analytical techniques for radiological operations, including Defense Waste Processing Facility, Tank Farms, Saltstone facility, Tritium facilities, Solid Waste disposal, Area Closure Projects
- Experience in design, specification, procurement start-up testing, procedure and training development for analytical equipment and facilities for radiological operations
- Extensive experience in designing and operating shielded cells to process highly radioactive samples and examine fuel elements remotely
- Extensive experience in design, fabrication, and demonstration of large-scale pilot equipment and facilities
- Extensive experience in design, testing, certification, and transportation of radiological material
- Experience in design, fabrication, and operation of mobile, modular radiological facilities for diverse purposes
Worker Safety and Health Programs
- Comprehensive worker safety and health program tailored to support conduct of research and development as well as conduct of operations
