Environmental Restoration Technologies

The Environmental Restoration Technologies Section (ERTS) provides direct support for treatment and remediation of contaminated groundwater and soil, and design and development of strategies for deactivation and decommissioning (D&D) of nuclear facilities.  The emphasis of ERTS activities is to match effective and efficient solutions to site specific conditions.

ERTS manages and operates the Center for Sustainable Groundwater and Soil Solutions, which provides technical consultation to DOE sites as well as private and public organizations across the country on soil and groundwater remediation.  ERTS has developed Monitored Natural Attenuation and Enhanced Attenuation methods for remediating contaminated groundwater that require less energy and lower cost than conventional methods, and adapted those improved methods to sites throughout the DOE Complex.

ERTS also supports decisions as to the appropriate decommissioning end-states of nuclear facilities (i.e., in-situ decommissioning, demolition, partial demolition/partial grouting) through modeling, performance assessment for regulatory concurrence, and monitoring strategies.
Associated ERTS competencies and capabilities include:

  • Development, deployment and optimization of environmental technologies and approaches
  • Transition strategies and technologies for active-to-passive remediation
  • Groundwater flow and contaminant transport expertise and experience (hydrogeology, geochemistry, modeling)
  • Barrier and containment system design and performance monitoring
  • Data integration and scaling (provide the critical linkage between lab scale, pilot scale and field scale activities)
  • Development and negotiation of regulatory strategies
  • Assessment and validation of remediation strategies for SRS and sites across DOE Complex
