Dr. Joan Woodard to Chair SRNL External Advisory Board

AIKEN, SC (May 25, 2011) -- Dr. Joan Woodard, former Executive Vice President of the Department of Energy's Sandia National Laboratories, will chair the Savannah River National Laboratory External Advisory Board (SRNL/EAB).

The SRNL/EAB will provide high-level assessment and strategic guidance regarding laboratory operations, scientific and technical capabilities, program direction, and partnerships with government and private sector entities.

"Joan is one of our nation's foremost leaders in national security issues," said Dr. Terry Michalske, SRNL Laboratory Director. "Her extensive background with the DOE national laboratories, including areas of energy and environmental management, make her the ideal person to lead this important function for our laboratory. Her advice is broadly sought throughout the government - we are fortunate to have her in this important role for the laboratory."

Dr. Woodard served at Sandia for more than 35 years, including ten years as an Executive Vice president and Deputy Laboratory Director. During her career at Sandia she held executive leadership positions in all of the mission programs at Sandia, including the nuclear weapons, nonproliferation, military technology and systems, energy, environment and waste management technology, and intelligence, as well as serving as chief operating officer responsible for all operating areas of the laboratories.

She holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California Berkeley; an M.S. in Engineering Economic Systems from Stanford University; and a B.S. in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Missouri-Rolla (magna cum laude). Dr. Woodard began her professional career as a researcher in solar energy programs, and has conducted research in areas ranging from analysis of energy technologies and heat transfer phenomenon during combustion processes, to waste management and pollution prevention.

Dr. Woodard has served on a number of national panels and boards, including the Intelligence Science Board, the Army Science Board as well as a Defense Science Board Task Force. She has served on the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board (AF/ SAB), and the Congressional Commission to Assess the Vulnerabilities of the US Infrastructure to Electromagnetic Pulse. She also served on the National Academy of Science Study on Science and Technology for Countering Terrorism, resulting in the publication "Making the Nation Safer."

Dr. Woodard is a lifetime member of the Society of Women Engineers; a member of the International Women's Forum; and a chair elect of the Missouri University of Science & Technology Board of Trustees. She serves as a corporate director for PNM Resources, Inc. (NYSE:PNM).

The full SRNL/EAB membership is being finalized and a first meeting is scheduled for early September.

SRNL is DOE's applied research and development national laboratory located at the Savannah River Site. SRNL puts science to work to support DOE and the nation in the areas of environmental management, national security, and clean energy. SRNL is operated for the Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management by Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC.
