Burris Named to SRNL Position

Tony BurrisAIKEN, SC (May 16, 2011) – Dr. Anthony (Tony) Burris has been named to the position of Associate Laboratory Director for National and Homeland Security for the Department of Energy's Savannah River National Laboratory.

Dr. Burris had a 25-year career serving in management of various national security and intelligence programs at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. His Los Alamos career included an assignment as Program Manager for International Technology, in which he worked extensively on technology projects for the intelligence community, the Department of Defense and federal law enforcement. His professional recognition included a Distinguished Service Medallion from the Central Intelligence Agency, and a commendation from the International Atomic Energy Agency for his role in nuclear inspections in Iraq.

He also served for six years as Associate Dean of the Physical Science Laboratory at New Mexico State University, where he oversaw national security-related research and interactions, and where he helped develop a minor concentration in Intelligence Studies. Most recently, he has been involved in independent consulting activities on national security and intelligence issues.

"Dr. Burris has a wealth of experience in the type of programs that have long been important work at the Savannah River National Laboratory," said Dr. Terry Michalske, Director of SRNL. "He has an excellent reputation within the national security community, and he has the skills that will help us continue to increase our value as an asset within the national security community." Dr. Burris is a veteran of the U.S. Army, and received multiple decorations for combat service in Vietnam including the Silver Star and the Bronze Star with V-Device. He has a B.S. and M.S. from New Mexico State University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky. His appointment is effective June 1.

SRNL is DOE's applied research and development national laboratory located at the Savannah River Site. SRNL puts science to work to support DOE and the nation in the areas of environmental management, national and homeland security, and energy security. The management and operating contractor for SRS and SRNL is Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC.
